In this Blog, Being an Art Copy Cat, Is A Good Thing?, we answer the question on every Artists Mind, if stealing like an Artist is Good and Honourable, or WHAT? I have provided Ideas, Thoughts, Websites and Videos, on how you can be a Genius Artist, and how to Execute, your Art creativity, to a Greater and Higher Level too… Also I have attempted to Steal Like An Artist, by creating my version of two paintings, with my preference of Colours and Style, which is my Natural Signature, Artist Style, as an Artist. Learning a Master’s Drawing Secrets, texture, colour…Genius:–
When you think about it, the art world is built on copying. Unlike plagiarism, copying Master drawings, is what most Artists do and have done for centuries.
Why?–because it is an excellent way to study and evaluate incredible artwork. During the 16 – 17th Centuries, this Art Method to copy other Artists, was very popular.
Copying–allows Artists to demonstrate their individual ability to draw, render, and give homage to Genius Artists–(Art Masters), all of the above recognition… and this Method, helps to keep the Old Art Masters, work, alive into the distant future.
Copying works–in fact, all the great Art Works, are available to you, to observe and to discover the techniques used. You work at your own individual pace, this process improves on your skills as an Artist…
To Copy like An Artist?–you must remember and follow these four steps–
- Make a copy of the drawing in the style you like.
- Copy a drawing style you like, because it is up to you to give the image a lot of your attention, so that you progress well in the Art Style, of your choice.
- You will need to create a good quality image to work from. You could work in an Art Gallery, Museum, look in Exhibition Catalogues, or you could find a Poster size reproduction of the work for good tones, and clear detail and renderings.
- You could Tone your paper in the style of the Old Masters, who never used pure white paper. So apply a little neutral colour, or apply a wash over the paper,to give a little colour.
Copying for the Love of Art?–copying Master drawings is enjoyable and rewarding, it rewards you with improvements in your drawing skills...

An Artist’s Copy Thought?–when you have the urge, to recreate a Master drawing, do not hesitate, get busy creating the Art Creation. This calling is your creativity. You must not Copy blind exactly what you see. You need to be and produce a Unique slant on the Original masterpiece.

- Different supports, paper, canvas, textured papers.
- Draw the positions of character, in a totally, different area, or positions.
- You could draw and paint a Huge Art Piece, or A very Small Piece of the work.
- You could use Mixed Media Collage, and other types of papers.

In the following two paintings, below in this blog, I have Stolen like An Artist. In the first painting, it is a Watercolour made by Paul Cezanne, I have drawn the painting in my Style. I have primed the watercolour paper, in Winsor and Newton Watercolour, in pale Blue. The start of the main area of the painting, I have used Acrylic Paints, the Monte Mart–Silver Series–Matt Colours, and in completing this painting, I have used a Fine Liner– Black–Sharpie Marker, which I use in most of my paintings to complete, the paintings, I Create. The 1907, Retrospective Cezanne Painting, has Greatness and acknowledgement, to his Ability and position, as the Most Influential Artist, of CUBISM. Which is A GREAT ACHIEVEMENT, To His MEMORY, and to All the Art Works, he made, in His Life Time…

In this Second Painting, I have Stolen like An Artist. I have aimed to use Brilliant Colours, using the Monte Mart–Silver Series–Matt Colours, to make this painting. I have Outlined the painting in, Fine–Black Sharpie, to complete, my Painting. In which Colours and Black outlining, is my signature Style, as an Artist. This is based, on a Painting by Henri Matisse, Who was a French Artist, who was known for His USE of Brilliant Colours, and his Fluid and Original Draughtsmanship, Art Works…His Work, The Plum Blossoms, was purchased in 2005, for US– $25 Million Dollars…
